Fast Friday - Soft Curry Lion

Isn't this card cute? I had bought this lion stamp last year for my daughter. It is currently in my care, so I decided to make a card with it!

I used Crushed Curry cs for the card & diecut a Whisper White Top Note with the Top Note Die & a Cuttlebug. The lion is stamped with Soft Suede ink & sponged with Crushed Curry ink. Then I tied a polka dotted Soft Suede ribbon around the "top note". So simple!

On the inside of the card I stamped "Thanking of You". Yes, you.

Think About Color Thursday - Old Olive, Perfect Plum, More Mustard, Very Vanilla

TODAY'S THINK ABOUT COLOR POST COMBINATION:

Very Vanilla

Old Olive

Perfect Plum

More Mustard

Today's card is perfect for boys, whether young, teen, or even those grown men who think they are still boys. The current catty has an entire collection of "Extreme" stamps - Extreme Snowboard, Extreme Surfboard, Extreme Skateboard, Extreme Dirtbike, and Extreme Guitar. What a unique bunch of stamps - check them out on page 80 of the catty! The creations I think up for these stamps are all very abstract, which is a nice change.

Not only have I combined some interesting colors, but I also have combined two interesting stamp sets - Extreme Snowboard and Trendy Trees. No, there are no trees on this card. The little swirly that is one of 4 leaf choices for the Trendy Trees stamp set makes a perfect "action swirl"! I think it looks rather cool!

How did I make the little ridges on the Old Olive strip of cs? I embossed grooves into the cs at repeated intervals using a stylus & paper trimmer (the stylus is run through the groove in the paper trimmer). I grooved it almost to the end & folded over a little cuff. A small oval punch works well for a little tab - just punch, fold in half, & add a brad or eyelet!

The snowboard dude is adhered with dimensionals. Hope you like it!

Tuesday Tips - Heat Embossing Chocolate Baroque

Heat embossing is what makes this card so stunning.

Here's what you'll need to make this card:
cs: Chocolate Chip, Close to Cocoa, Very Vanilla or Whisper White
inks: Chocolate Chip
other: Clear Embossing Powder, Heat Tool, 5/8" Chocolate Chip Grosgrain Ribbon, Pretties Kit half pearl, Crystal Effects, decorative blade scissors or a decorative border punch such as the Eyelet Border Punch or Scalloped Border Punch

If you haven't tried heat embossing, this is a fun technique to try. Here's how:

Before stamping, rub the cs with an embossing buddy. This step is optional, although your image will be much clearer & there won't be any extra flecks of embossing powder melted where you don't want it.

Stamp the image from the Baroque Motifs stamp set with Chocolate Chip ink onto the Close to Cocoa cs. I suggest you do one image at a time. Craft ink or VM are the inks that work best for heat embossing. Sometimes classic dye-based ink can be used for heat embossing, through you will need to work rather quickly. The reason craft ink works best for heat embossing is because it doesn't dry as fast, which gives you plenty of time to get your heat embossing done. The ink must stay wet through the entire process.

With that being said, sprinkle clear EP over the top of the stamped images as soon as you stamp them. Tap off excess powder & funnel it back ino the EP jar to save for another day. The powder sticks to wherever the ink is on the paper. If it doesn't stick, that means that either you are using the wrong type of inkpad or you are not working quickly enough. Heat the powdered image with a heat tool by holding it several inches away until the powdered image turns shiny. You can actually see a change as you heat it. Once you see an area "melt" into a shiny liquid, that area is done & you can move on to other areas that still need "melting". When you're all done, the images should be raised & shiny & pretty.

Create a decorative edge on the Close to Cocoa large cs & tie ribbon around it. Now layer everything on the card front as shown. The half pearl can be adhered with a dot of Crystal Effects.

Map It Monday - Raspberry Tent

Did you see the tent topper card I posted last week? Well, here's another tent topper card. This card inspiration can from my friend Teri H. This particular style of Tent Topper card has cs dimensions of 8 1/2" x 4 1/4". When it is folded, it becomes a square 4 1/4" card. The "topper" can be cut to any size & shape & is adhered to the front of the card so it projects up from the fold.

Use the Petal Pizzazz stamp set & Raspberry Tart dsp. Razzleberry Lemonade dsp would like terrific for this card too! The beauty of Stampin' Up products is that we can first choose any designer paper & then customize the cs, ink, & ribbon to match colors in the paper!

Cameo Coral, Kiwi Kiss, Pretty in Pink, & Rose Red were the colors I pulled from Raspberry Tart dsp for this card & topper. I stamped, cut out, & layered the flowers on the topper & then made a flower center out of the Build-a-Brad kit. Have you tried that? It's fun to make a brad that matches whatever you are making!

Add matching ribbon & perhaps punch with a ticket corner punch for some eye-catching detail.

How can you make sure the finished card fits into the envelope? Lay your short little card atop your envelope & than adjust where you will adhere the topper piece. The finished card with topper & all should fit within the size of that envelope so make sure the topper is positioned at an appropriate height before pressing to adhere. Oh, and make sure you apply adhesive only to the bottom portion of your topper!

Have a great day!

Scrapbook Saturday - Simply Scrappin'

This layout is made using some left over parts from a "Simply Scrappin'" Kit that is old, yet still looks great!

The color combination for this layout are: Bordering Blue, Night of Navy, Real Red & Whisper White. Designer Papers and matching cs are simply cut & used as layering under the photos. Everything you see here are stickers from the kit - the photo corners, borders, embellishments & page decorations.

If you like to scrapbook, but don't seem to have lots of time to devote to each layout or feel design-challenged or color-challenged, get your hands on these kits! There are so many stickers/embellishments with each kit that you will be able to design numerous layouts with one kit, with each layout looking different!

Fast Friday - Busy, Bashful & Blue

Here is a busy Fast Friday card. And, it's easy.

Begin with a Bashful Blue card. Punch about 7 or 8 circles from Bashful Blue cs with a 1 3/8" circle punch. Stamp a small image onto all of the circles (I have used the retired Darling Dots Hostess Stamp Set from last year's catalog, but I give you alternatives later in this post.)

Now make that So Saffron special circle. You can just punch a scallop circle with the Stampin' Up scallop circle punch & layer one of the blue circles on top of it. I chose a different method. First, I punched a 1 3/8" circle punch into So Saffron cs and then centered & punched the scallop circle punch around the hole I had just punched. It becomes a scalloped circle with a big donut hole in the middle. Next, I adhered my blue circles onto the card front & chose one of them as the middle of my So Saffron scalloped circle. I adhered the "donut" scalloped circle around that blue circle with a 2-way glue pen. This method takes a few extra minutes, but it has a slightly different look simply layering a circle atop a scalloped circle. I think it takes much longer to explain this step than it actually takes to make the entire card!

The last thing I did on this card was to stamp a few small messages around the blue circles. I chose "be happy" from the same "Darling Dots" stamp set, yet any small message can be used. Substitutes for Darling Dots might be For All You Do, Season of Friendship, Hello Again, Simple Friendship, Razzle Dazzle, One of a Kind, or Circle Circus.

Have fun with this tone on tone card!

Think About Color Thursday - Bashful Blue & Real Red

I really like the look of the vibrant Real Red with the soft Bashful Blue!

Here's a card I made with a new stamp set called Razzle Dazzle. It's quite an interesting design. The floral design can be used to make attractive backgrounds. Each stamp in this set is unique, plus I love the message!

To make this card, stamp the floral stamp with a Real Red Classic Stampin' Pad repeatedly onto the top half of the card, turning the stamp so the pattern is random looking. Stamp "It's Good to Dream" with Real Red onto Bashful Blue cs for a "belt" across the card.

Stamp the tiny flower in the bottom right corner in Real Red ink. Punch a very tiny circle from Bashful Blue cs & adhere to the flower's center.

This card turned out so pretty!

Whatever Wednesday - Tent Topper Card

Have you tried making a tent card? I think my photo here is a little blurry. Sorry about that. But, before I explain how to make a tent topper card, check out the new "Modern Label" punch I used! I love its shape!!!

To make a "tent topper" card, cut the cs 4 1/4" x 8 1/2" so that when the card is folded, it makes a 4 1/4" square. The "topper" (the square or circle or whatever shape you want that extends above the card's fold) can be as big as you want.

If you want the card to fit into a standard A2 size envelope, the finished card size needs to be no larger than 4 1/4" x 5 1/2". An easy way to make sure that the card will fit into its envelope is to lay the card, before the topper is adhered, directly on top of the envelope. You can then adjust how far down to adhere the topper so the card is a touch smaller than the envelope.

The Bundle of Joy stamp set (retired) is used for this card. Good substitute stamp sets would be: Cute & Cuddly, Teddy & Train, Build-a-Roo, Pun Fun, Pony Party, Under the Stars, or Sock Monkey. The teddy bears are background stamped with polka dots before being cut out.

I would love to see your tent topper cards! Email me a .jpg or bring them to a stamp camp!

Tuesday Tips - Surfs Up Ripcurl

I am stamping with the totally cool "Surfs Up" stamp set again. Before doing any stamping, I ripped (get it?.....ripcurl?....it's surfing lingo!) the Bermuda Bay cs along the top edge unevenly to resemble waves.

The Tuesday Tip for this week:

Do you know that if you rip cs toward you, the layers of the paper can be seen (like in this card)? When you rip cs away from you, you only see the ripped edge.

Waves are stamped on the ripped cs. The surfboard is stamped & then cut out.

I adhered a thin strip of Hawaiian designer paper to give the card a Hawaii flavor. "Surf's Up" is stamped directly onto the kraft card.

Map It Monday - White Flowers Inspiration

This map is about as uncomplicated as it could ever be so I haven't even included a map! Just add a belly band or ribbon across the front of the card. You can add cs layers if desired like I have done here. To make this card, use the Inspired by Nature stamp set from page 96 in the new catty. There are many looks that can be achieved with this stamp set with both regular ink or heat embossing.

What you need:
CS: Kraft brown 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" card
Not Quite Navy cs 4" x 5 1/4"
Old Olive cs 3 3/4" x 5"
Stamp Set: Inspired by Nature
Inks: Classic Stampin' Pads - Chocolate Chip & Old Olive; Versamark Inkpad
Other: White Embossing Powder, Heat Tool, Chocolate Chip 5/8" Grosgrain Ribbon

For this card, stamp the grasses with an Old Olive inkpad. Next, stamp the flowers with VM & heat emboss it with white EP.

Add a message with Chocolate Chip ink & tie Chocolate Chip ribbon around the cs. Layer the Old Olive cs onto Not Quite Navy cs. Lastly, adhere everything onto your kraft card.

Scrapbook Saturday - White, Scraps, Doodles & Metal

Sorry I missed last week's Scrapbook Saturday. The layout I am posting today uses Whisper White 12" x 12" base paper that is dressed up in bright Stampin' Up designer papers. Everything on the page seems to jump out at you. But there are three other elements that add interest to this layout.

Color on White: Bright Stampin' Up designer papers in 3 complimentary colors keep you lookin'! Matte some of the pics onto pretty paper so they look like picture frames. Add trim pieces in the form of punched circles & strips of color.

Metal: Add some hardware in the form of staples & brads.

Doodles: The last thing that gives this finished page such a great look is the journaling and doodling. Scribble, doodle & journal to your heart's content with a dark journaling marker. One of my favorite doodles is when I outline things twice with thin, double, curvy lines.

I enjoy sharing with you & hope you like it! Have fun creating your own white page with lots of interest!

Fast Friday - Olives on Turquoise

The Fast Friday card this week has no stamping involved. You heard it right! Instead, I used those beautiful Stampin' Up! rubons.

The first thing I did on this card was punch the side edge with an eyelet border punch. I rubbed a selection of Old Olive rubons onto the card & added dots with a Uniball White Gel Pen.

That's all! I am thinking that rubons & cs & a wooden popsicle stick or bone folder are all I need if I want to make cards while I'm somewhere else besides home! ....in the car (as a passenger!), in the dentist's office, etc. Now that's a good thing!

Tuesday Tips: Embossed Paper Piecing

Well, I missed out on Scrapbook Saturday AND Map It Monday this week - I was unexpectedly out of town. Now instead of going backward, I'll just post today & work forward.

The tip for today is: Use dry embossed paper for paper piecing.

The center of this flower is actually punched from a piece of card stock that I ran through the Cuttlebug in an embossing folder. It adds a touch of elegance to this flower.

The stamped flower petals were colored in with Stampin' Write markers.

Fast Friday - Writing on Dark Cardstock

It's Fast Friday once again. Time flies. Remember those "Create a Flower" kits that Stampin' Up had last year in the catalog? I needed a fast card, so once again I pulled them out. Leftover Simply Scrappin' Kits or other stickers or diecuts are also handy to have on hand. Add a scrap of cs on the left side of the card, stamp a simple message, & then punch it out with the Word Window Punch. After adhering those, layer on the flower stickers - easy peasy!

The title of today's post is "Writing on Dark Cardstock"......yes, you can write the inside message on a dark colored card with a Uniball white gel pen. However, there's another alternative. Cut a piece of white or vanilla cs to adhere on the inside of the card. That way, you never have to avoid making cards with dark cs. What size should the inside cs be? The general rule of thumb is to cut that layer usually one quarter to one half inch smaller than the card itself. So, if a card is 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" (standard A2 size), then cut the inside white cs at 4" x 5 1/4". The same thing applies to the front of a card - if you want a card front to have a narrow margin/frame around it, such as the card in this prior post http://lahinks.blogspot.com/2009/05/fast-friday-stampin-up-printed-window.html, cut a contrasting or coordinating cs to be one quarter inch or one half inch smaller than the card. If you want the border on the front of the card to be one half inch, then cut that cs layer at 3 3/4" x 5". This is simple stuff, yet good information to know.

C you tomorrow with a scrapbook layout.

Think About Color Thursday - Rich Razzleberry, Soft Suede & Kraft Brown

It's fun putting together color combinations using the new In Colors. Here's one to try!

I've pulled out the Fifth Avenue Floral stamp set again. The card is made from kraft brown card stock.

Stamp one of the Fifth Avenue Floral flowers in Rich Razzleberry trailing down the card front. Stamp the same flower again in Rich Razzleberry onto Rich Razzleberry cs. Trim around the flower so you can adhere it to the card front. A piece of the new In Color "Soft Suede" is added to the left side of this card near the bottom. Then adhere the Rich Razzleberry flower.

Ink the message stamp very well & stamp it across the center of the card.

Whatever Wednesday - POP UP ZOO BIRTHDAY CARD

Have you ever made a Pop Up card? It’s fun – try it! For this version of a pop up card, you basically create 2 “cards”, and then you adhere them together. I will refer to these cards as the “outer card” (the front of the finished card) & the “inner card” (this will become the interior of the finished card, and it includes the guts).

You will need:
cs:
2 pieces Whisper White cs, each 5 ½” x 8 ½”, folded in half so they each measure 5 ½” x 4 ¼”
white & Certainly Celery scraps
DSP: Cutie Pie
Inks: Stazon Black, Stampin’ Up Stampin’ Write markers – Rose Red, Bashful Blue, Certainly Celery, Basic Black
Stamp sets: Older & Wiser, Zoofari, A Little Birdie Told Me
Other: Certainly Celery Ribbon, paper trimmer, scissors

Outer Card -
Decorate the front of a card just like any other card. I have used the turtle stamp from Older & Wiser & colored it with markers, then layered it onto Certainly Celery cs. For the pink paper, I have used some Rose Red printed dsp from the Cutie Pie set. Before adhering the Cutie Pie Rose Red printed dsp, I adhered some Certainly Celery ribbon diagonally across the corner. Then I adhered both the Rose Red dsp & turtle piece to the card front. Set the Outer Card aside.

Inner Card –
Create Your Pop Up Image(s):
First, you’ll want to create the animal(s) that you want to pop up. Stamp it, color it, & cut it out. I have stamped some zoo animals from the Zoofari stamp set in Black Stazon ink & colored them with Stampin’ Write markers. When choosing the image, think about size & how it will attach inside the card. You’ll see what I mean as you work through your card.

Create the Mechanical part:
Now that you have your pop up animals ready, let’s create the jutting tabs for them. Cut a pair of equal length slits into the Inner Card's fold with scissors or a paper trimmer. If you want more than one pop up, you’ll need to think about their spacing. The longer your cuts, the more forward your pop up will be to you when you open the card. I've cut 3 sets of jutting tabs below.

Open up this Inner Card & push the little tab through so it is extended in the opposite direction as shown below, guiding the tab as you push, folding where the slits stop. Folding can be done by simply pinching where those slits end. The card stock tends to tear if you don't crease the ends of the slits.

Go over the creases of these jutting tabs well with a bone folder.

Close & then open your card - you can begin to visualize how the jutting tab will work & how you will be adhering a pop up image to the jutting tab. There’s a few things to consider at this point: Apply adhesive ONLY to the front of the jutting tab so the animal will stand straight up when the card is halfway open. Also be careful that your adhesive is applied only to an area where cs will meet cs – if any adhesive extends past where you really need it, it will bond to unwanted places on the card or the animals won’t pop up. The red area here in this photo shows where I have applied the “sticky strip” on this card.

Now press the cut-out image(s) into the adhesive. Be careful to make sure your cut-out images don’t pass the midline of the card when closed – it would bend the images. If this is your first pop up card, take note of how the animal pop ups extend further toward you on the longer jutting tabs – if you vary the jutting tabs, it’ll be more 3-D. Also take note that your tab width shouldn’t be wider than your pop up image, or you’d lose that “floating” effect.

Stamp a message:
Now that you have everything positioned, stamp a message or other designs around your pop ups.

Assembly -
Adhere both 2 cards together! The adhesive only needs to be applied onto the back of card 2 - apply adhesive in all corners & in between the tabs, but not on the tabs. I stand the partially-open Inner Card on a flat surface & line up the Outer Card over the top of the Inner Card, making sure both folds are directly lined up under each other before pressing the cards together. Use a bone folder to crease all of the card’s folds. You may need to do some housekeeping & trim around your card edges if the edges don’t meet up exactly. A scissors works fine for this.

If you don’t have the stamp sets I have used here, substitute! If you want to make a pop up card at one of my upcoming stamp camps, send me an email & I’ll make it happen!

Young children especially enjoy pop up cards – it’ll surely bring a big smile!
