Map It Monday - Triple Panel / Triple Bow

Lots of layers!  That is the theme of today's Map It Monday card!

Melon Mambo and Crushed Curry work together to make this card simply adorable!  Melon Mambo Polka Dot Grosgrain ribbon, and lots of it, give this card such a perky personality!  The stamp set is called Life's a Picnic.  This set is a  Hostess Level II stamp set from the Spring Mini catalog.  Here is the map I used for the card:

Did I mention that I used LOTS of Melon Mambo Polka Dot Grosgrain ribbon?  Whew!  Why not give this card map a try!?!

Fast Friday - Inspiring and Charming Gray and Pink

The Fast Friday card this week is made from a 4" x 4" Pink Passion card.

I adhered a small piece of Urban Garden dsp to the card and I also adhered a beautiful ruffly gray/white ribbon cut on an angle on the ends. I inserted a silver brad into the ribbon before adhering it to the card.

The top half of the card is stamped with a Basic Gray Classic Stampin' Pad and the script stamp in the stamp set called Charming.

I used a long, narrow scrap of Whisper White cs and stamped the tiny butterfly from the Charming stamp set several times in a row.

I felt the card needed some softening since the pink is bright, so I sponged Basic Gray ink onto the card and the white butterfly strip.

The last thing I did here is to adhere the butterflies with dimensionals.

Have a great weekend!

Think About Color Thursday - Tempting Turquoise, Real Red, Kraft

This color combination is a fantastic trio for a masculine card.

The message is stamped onto kraft cs punched with a "key tag" punch.  I'm so glad I purchased this punch before it retired!

The bottom half of this kraft card, plus both of the 2 1/2" squares in Real Red and Tempting Turquoise, are run through a diecutting machine (Big Shot or Cuttleburg, for instance) in an embossing folder.

After adhering the squares to the card front, I added some pretty striped ribbon & attached the message with dimensionals.

What a quick and easy card, yet just right for a man's birthday!

Whatever Wednesday - Chalk Grid Technique

The Chalk Grid Lines technique that I used to create this card is an unusual one and is a lot of  fun to do.

I began the grid with a square piece of Whisper White cs.  I applied chalk pastels with a sponge dauber, rubbing in circles in several colors.  Once the entire piece of cs was covered with soft colors, I lined up a ruler & erased with a pencil eraser all the way down the ruler's straight edge, in order to lift the color off the canvas.  I repeated this step across the entire chalked cs, working diagonal erasure lines across it.  Then, I turned the cs a quarter turn & repeated the same process going in the opposite direction.  When the erasing in both directions is all done, you are left with a chalked "grid" which can be used as an eye-catching background.

The chalked grid is adhered to the card, a message is stamped with Soft Suede ink, and a small Soft Sky cs with a ripped bottom edge is adhered to the card.

Next, I stamped the rooster image from the Country Morning Hostess Level I Stamp Set in Soft Suede Classic ink and watercolored it with a blender pen and pastel chalks.

The card needed a dark splash of color, so I added a scrap of brown ribbon with a mini library clip and adhered the rooster with dimensionals to the card.

I hope you find some time to try the chalk grid technique.  Let me know how you like it!

Tuesday Tips - Folding and Cutting Card Stock

Sometimes I am asked questions regarding card stock cutting and folding.  This is basic information, yet I was making cards for quite a long time until I figured some of it out.  If you already know everything posted here today, then hopefully you will realize that you are doing things right!  If this is new information, I know you will be happy to hear about the basics of cutting and folding card stock for your cards.

What size do I cut my card stock for a greeting card?
There are several  standard sizes for greeting cards.  The most popular size is 4 ¼” x 5 ½”.  The envelope size for this card is commonly known in the paper industry as A2.  One of the reasons this card size is so popular is because standard 8 ½” x 11” card stock can be cut down the center, in either direction, to provide two cards from each sheet of card stock.  You can choose whether to cut your card stock down the long edges or short edges.  Your card fold style will depend on which way you make the cut.

For a long, skinny card stock that will fold at the top, you’ll need to lay the card stock with the short edge along the top of your paper trimmer  and then move the card stock’s left edge over to the 4 ¼” mark on your trimmer’s ruler guide.

For a standard side fold card, you will be laying card stock with the long edge along the top of your paper trimmer and then move the paper’s left edge over to the 5 ½” on the trimmer’s ruler guide.  Note that though this style is called "side fold", the card can be turned so it opens at the top as well.

Once you slide the cutting blade all the way down the card stock, you should have two perfectly sized card stock pieces.  Fold each one in half for two cards!

I sometimes have trouble getting a nice crease in my card when I fold the card stock.  Any tips?
First of all, using only your hands to fold a piece of card stock may not get you the professional looking results you are looking for.  Have you ever folded a card and ended up with tiny wrinkles around the spine of the card?  Maybe even fissures or a fold that isn’t even straight down the center?

To avoid this nuisance, I recommend using one of two techniques for card folding:  1) slide a bone folder across the area where you are attempting to fold as  you are folding,

or (2) lay the card stock on a paper trimmer and either slide a scoring blade down at the exact measurement where you plan to fold the card OR, if you don’t have a scoring blade, pull a stylus down the cutting ridge of the paper trimmer at the exact measurement where your fold will be.

Once  the fold line is scored, you can determine which direction you will bend the card stock when folding your card.  You can use your finger to guide the card stock into a nice crease, but I prefer to guide the fold with a bone folder.  You will end up with a crisp, neat crease this way.

Card stock naturally bends easier in one direction versus another, depending on how you are bending it in relation to the grain of the paper.  Try this…..  Get out a sheet of card stock and attempt to bend it in both directions.  Do you feel a little resistance when you bend in one direction.......

yet the bend feels more natural and cooperative when you bend the paper in the opposite direction?

Try not to fight the grain of the paper – let your card stock bend in the direction that it wants to.  You will have a much more prominent crease on your card, without wrinkles or fissures.

How can I cut 12” x 12” card stock for cards without much waste?
To keep things simplest, I like to cut 12” x 12” card stock into four equal 6” squares.  So, I cut it in half,

then I cut each half in half again...........

Those four card stock pieces can be used to create four cards that can be mailed in Stampin’ Up’s small open-end envelopes.

Well, I hope you learned something new or that you saw something today that confirms what you already do!

Map It Monday - Tag Map

A gift tag map is the map for this week.  Gift tags can be attached to a present with a ribbon, used independently, or adhered to a card as a focal point.
I began with Whisper White cs and ran it through a diecutting machine with the Stampin' Up Two Tags Bigz Die.  There are two different tags that will die cut when you use this die.  This project's particular style of tag uses the wider tag.  Use the other tag for another project!

Score the tag on the score lines with a bone folder to give it a nice crease.  Open the tag up & stamp a message onto what will be the inside of the tag.  I chose "wonderful mother".  The Stampin' Up Classic Stampin' Pad in Basic Black is used for the message.

The Wings of Friendship stamp set's Hawaiian-style flower is stamped in first, second, and third generation stamping on the interior of the tag.  Along the top edge of the tag is a Melon Mambo stamped image from the Vintage Vogue Stamp Set.  This bar-style flower image creates a beautiful border.

The same Hawaiian flower is stamped onto the front of the tag, just like on the inside of the tag.  I also repeated the Melon Mambo bar-style flower image across the bottom on the tag front.

I stamped "for you" onto Melon Mambo cs and punched it out with the Modern label punch.  I also stamped another Hawaiian flower in Basic Black ink onto Melon Mambo cs, and I trimmed around the flower with trimming scissors.    A bone folder distresses and curls/curves the modern label.  I also punched a 1 3/4" circle from Basic Black cs.  The circle and the Melon Mambo flower are adhered to the tag front, and then a pewter brad is inserted into the modern label.  The modern label is then adhered, and I allowed it to curve & curl so the label was really floating above the tag, with the help of a dimensional on each end.

A jumbo pewter eyelet is set into the diecut hole in the tag.  I used the Crop-o-Dile.  A strand of ribbon finishes it off.

Here is a map layout for this tag.  Happy tagging!

Fast Friday - Patriotic Friendship

Fast Friday time!  I began today's card with Pacific Point cs (yay for Pacific Point returning as a core color in the Stampin' Up Color Renovation!!!).  The only color inkpad I have used today is also Pacific Point.

The Note to Self stamp set images (the message lines and the tiny star) are stamped onto the card.  The Wings of Friendship Level 2 Hostess Set from the current IB&C has this message about friendship, so I stamped it onto Whisper White cs.  I punched the message with the small tag punch & trimmed the sides down so it was just a touch narrower.  It is adhered with a dimensional.

A Real Red cs strip is adhered across the card.  I used a paper ruffling technique to attach a second Real Red longer cs strip to the card.  Matching buttons finish off this card.

Happy weekend!

Think About Color Thursday - Sage Shadow, Certainly Celery, Whisper White

A Tribute to Sage Shadow Card Stock

This sad day was inevitable.......Stampin' Up has announced that Sage Shadow cs 12" x 12"  is no longer available.  Sold out.  Gone.  Forever. :(

So, today's card is none other than Sage Shadow.  Pair it with Certainly Celery and it is a thing of beauty.  Hopefully, you have some Sage Shadow cs left in your stamping supplies so you, too, can continue to smile for Sage Shadow.  It is one of the discontinued colors during Stampin' Up's Color Renovation.  I will miss her.

I dry embossed Whisper White cs with a pretty embossing folder first.  Next, I punched curly labels from some designer series paper (Wintergreen dsp, Holiday Mini Catalog 2007, retired).  Who would've thought that the curly label punch could be used to make a patchwork pattern?  Adhere the little labels on the diagonal to form that patchwork & trim around all four sides of the white rectangle.

Next, adhere the white rectangle to the card and add a thin strip of dsp beside the white rectangle, if desired.  Stamp a message on a die cut tag. I stamped in Always Artichoke classic ink onto Sage Shadow cs.  Then, run Certainly Celery ribbon through the die cut tag, tie the ribbon around the card front & add a stampin' dimensional underneath the tag.

Have a great, sunny day!

Whatever Wednesday - Silver and Pom

Whatever Wednesday's card this week is an elegant wedding card similar to a card that we made at my May Stamp Camp.  Here is the interior:

This card is created with several layers, each lifted with dimensionals.

The layers are dry embossed with an elegant swirl embossing folder.  One of the layers is a diecut Top Note.

The embossed cs pieces are sponged lightly with silver ink and heated with a heat tool to avoid smearing.  The wedding dress and "bliss" are images from the Stampin' Up Summer Mini Catalog's Blissful Bride stamp set.  The images in this wedding stamp set are exquisite!

The images are stamped in silver ink, then sprinkled with clear EP and heat embossed.

Pink Pomegranate is a Stampin' Up In Color from a couple years ago.  I had some cs and beautiful Pink Pomegranate ribbon left over, so I chose that color against the silver and white for its bright "punch".  You could substitute another "pop" of color instead of the Pink Pomegranate - try Night of Navy or Rose Red or even Real Red or Rich Razzleberry!  The bright cs square is punched with the scallop trim corner punch and the scallop trim edge punch.

The ribbon is wrapped around the fold of the card and double knotted.

I love this card and I am looking forward to giving it to a special couple for their wedding day!

Tuesday Tips - Bold Black

I'm sure you've decorated a room.  An old decorating rule is to use something black in every room, even if it is something small.  A black item, such as a wall decoration, fixture or even a lamp can help to enhance and clarify the other colors in a room.  Why not try this decorating rule when stamping a card?  On a smaller scale, that's what I've done here on today's card.

The pastels on this card are anchored with black brads and a black bow.  Actually, the flowers on the designer series paper are outlined in black as well, so the black flows throughout the card.  What do you think?

Map It Monday - BTUtiful

For Map It Monday today, I tilted some of the images.  The King of the Grill stamp set from the Summer Mini Catalog is the perfect stamp set for Father's Day or a masculine birthday.  It would also be a fun image for a barbecue invitation.  The best thing about this set is that the clear mount style is less than $15!

I've put to use the My Way and various sized oval punches on this card, as well as a mini library clip.  Paper piercing kicks it up a notch as well.  The color combination on this card is:  Mellow Moss, Really Rust, Bermuda Bay.

My next Stamp Camp is June 23 on a Wednesday - email me to register!

Fast Friday - Eggcellent and Groovy

Remember the Eggcellent Eggs Kit from the Spring Mini Catalog?  Well, I absolutely forgot to use it for Easter egg decorating.  I recently looked inside the package and was so excited to see more embellishments than our 3 dozen Easter eggs could ever have been adorned with.  So, the little diecut flowers and the designer paper scraps get used for a card today!

I began with a Groovy Guava 5 1/4" square card.   The front of the card is stamped with a stamp from the Itty Bitty Backgrounds stamp set.   On a small piece of Groovy Guava cs, I stamped the "thank u" from the True Friend stamp set with a Groovy Guava Classic inkpad.

Then, I popped out a few diecut flowers from the Eggcellent Eggs Kit & cut some scraps from the diecut sheets of designer series paper, and I adhered them to the card, mostly with dimensionals.

Think About Color Thursday - Wild Wasabi, Soft Suede, Very Vanilla

Wild Wasabi is back!  One of my favorite colors of all-time will soon be a core color in Stampin' Up's renovated color collections!

This unusual graduation card shows off Wild Wasabi quite well.  I've paired it with Soft Suede and Very Vanilla.

The beautiful graduation stamp is among the stamps you can purchase from Stampin' Up's new Summer Mini Catalog.  It has such a terrific message, whether it is for a high school graduate, college graduate, or beyond.
I have stamped this graduation stamp, called "Happy Grad", from that catty, in Wild Wasabi Classic ink onto Very Vanilla cs, then surrounded it with mini crowns stamped in Soft Suede ink.

Remember the Sale-a-Bration 2010 stamp set called Tiny Tags?  I just realized that it includes some very unique and interesting stamps!  There is the mini crown, as well as "4 you".  The "4 you" is stamped onto a scrap of Very Vanilla cs & the side is punched with the Spiral Punch to look like a page from a notebook.  I rubbed the edges of that little scrap with a Soft Suede inkpad so it would stand at attention on the card.  It is adhered with dimensionals.

Have you seen the Itty Bitty Backgrounds stamp set?  It is a new stamp set for me & I just realized that one of the stamps can give the look of the Color Spritzer tool!  How awesome is that?   I inked that stamp with Wild Wasabi ink and it really does look like I applied a spritz of color with the Color Spritzer tool!  The same thing is done on the "4 you" piece, except in Soft Suede ink.

I love using the Medium Jewelry Tag punch!  I used it on the "way 2 go" image & punched a tiny hole in the tag so I could insert gold cording through it.  The cord is wrapped around the card several times and then tied into a bow.

The "way 2 go" stamp is from the Occasions Mini Catty Level 1 Hostess Set called "Picture This".   Invite me to do a demonstration or workshop in your home or mine, invite your friends, and you can earn lots of free stuff, including a hostess set from the New Summer Mini Catalog or big catalog!

Whatever Wednesday - Scrubs

The card I made for my daughter's college graduation is one that I must show you!  She is studying medicine, so I thought a “scrub” shirt would be appropriate. Isn’t it cute? I created a pattern for it first, tracing the shape of a basic V-neck scrub shirt. Then, I traced the pattern onto a Bermuda Bay card & cut on the pencil traced lines.

Next, it was time to decorate it! Since scrubs are topstitched around the collar, cuffs & hem, I mimicked that topstitching with a Bermuda Bay Stampin’ Write marker. A straight edge/ruler is a helpful guide to get the stitching straight. The curved lines can be challenging, but it worked out great!

I sketched on a pocket using a Bermuda Bay Stampin’ Write marker.

The card would be incomplete without a stethoscope, right? So, I created one. With gray and black cs, I punched several sizes of circles and ovals to create it. Here are the sizes:

Circles: ½” gray – two
¾” gray – one
1” black – one
Double Ovals: First I punched a small oval, then I centered the large oval punch around the hole that I had punched with the small oval punch.
Black – two
Gray – one

Sponging around the card, most heavily onto the pocket, perks it up.

Inside I stamped a nice graduation message. Check out the "Happy Grad" graduation stamp that is sold as a single stamp in the new Summer Mini Catalog. It is priced at only $8.95. Unbelievable!

Tuesday Tips - Add Something Unexpected

Today I made a horizontal pocket card using my two favorite In Colors:  Bermuda Bay and Soft Suede.  The good news is that apparently I am not the only person that favors Soft Suede and so Stampin' Up will be merging Soft Suede into its Neutral Color Collection in the color renovation!

My Tuesday Tip this week is:  Add whimsy to a card!
You will see what I did in a minute!

Card stock that you'll need to make this card:
Bermuda Bay - Pocket is cut to 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"
Soft Suede - Card Insert is cut to 3 3/4" x 4 1/4"

First, score the card pocket piece at the halfway point, which is 4 1/4".  Then, score again at 1 1/2" & fold that "cuff" over.  Use a bone folder to give every scored line a nice crease.  You should now have a pocket that can be either adhered along the sides with Sticky Strip or even secured with a brad on each side.  It is a good idea to secure the flap as well with a small piece of Sticky Strip so it stays put.

Rounding the corners is optional.  I chose to round the top corners on the pocket, insert card, and the little bunny piece.

Time to decorate!  I added some patterns designer series paper in Bermuda Bay on both the card insert and the pocket, to tie them together.  I embellished the pocket with Soft Suede so both the pocket and insert coordinate.

The bunny stamp from the Animal Crackers stamp set is stamped in Soft Suede onto Soft Suede cs.  I also stamped a second bunny's head, punched it out with a 1/2" circle punch & adhered it over the top of the stamped bunny with a dimensional.  It gives his little funny bunny face a 3-D effect.  I also adhered the rectangle with the bunny stamped on it with dimensionals.  The Soft Suede circles are punched with a 1/2" circle punch.
A Bermuda Bay card stock pull-tab is attached to the insert card.  The tab punch is used on it.  I added a Soft Suede eyelet using a Crop-o-Dile to both secure it and give the insert card some contrast.

On the insert card, I masked the message on the bunny stamp & stamped the bunny hopping onto the card.  I think it adds something unexpected, something whimsical, to the card, which is my Tuesday Tip for this week.  It's all about the hopping bunny - whimsical and unexpected.  Finally, "happy birthday" adorns the card, stamped in Soft Suede.

Map It Monday - Two Watercolor Tags

Happy Map It Monday!

Use your two tags die on a card!  I watercolored some flowers from the "Country Morning" Level One Hostess Set (IB&C).  The palette is Pacific Point and a couple pink inkpads.  The aqua painter is a fun applicator to use for watercoloring & I used it here on these cards.

Stamp whatever you want on the card in one single color, the same color as the card.  Then, dress up the card with a tag!  I punched a 1" circle from the darker pink & added a large Designer Circle Brad!  Just adhere your watercolored piece with dimensionals!

Stamp camp this month will be Wednesday night, 5/12/2010 - email now if you want to still attend.  There is space available.

Fast Friday - Pale Flower Fancy

It's the first Fast Friday in May!  If you are new to my blog, that means that I post a card that is a quick creation, 10 minutes or less usually!

The Flower Fancy stamp set recently was on sale, and I made sure to add it to my Stampin' Up shopping basket!  I am soooo glad that I bought this stamp set because it is similar to another 2-step stamping floral set that I sold in a gently used stamp sale several years ago.  The two toned flowers  have a really soft, chalky appearance that is a favorite of mine.  So, I stamped the flowers with Classic Stampin' Pads of  Rich Razzleberry and Pale Plum, and I stamped the leaves with Always Artichoke and Mellow Moss Classic Stampin' Pads.  I did not use a Stampamajig; it's not necessary here to be exact with the placement of the solid inside image and line.

I punched the corners of the card with a Ticket Corner punch.

I stamped the line image of the large flower stamp onto Pale Plum cs and punched it out using the 1 3/4" circle punch.  The circle is adhered to the front of the card.

Lastly, I punched out a word window with the Word Window punch and stamped "I miss you" in Rich Razzleberry classic ink on the word window.  The "I miss you" comes from the Three Little Words stamp set.

Happy weekend!

Think About Color Thursday - Chocolate Chip, Very Vanilla, Cameo Coral, Regal Rose

I just got a new stamp set! It's called Animal Crackers & couldn't be cuter! This little giraffe stamp is in the set, along with other cute critter messages. I thought this card would be cute for a preschool graduation.

What you'll need to make this card:

cs: Very Vanilla, Cameo Coral, Regal Rose, Chocolate Chip
inks: Classic Stampin' Pads - Chocolate Chip, Cameo Coral; Stampin' Write Markers - Cameo Coral, Regal Rose
Stamp sets: Note to Self (star stamp), Animal Crackers
Other: spiral clippie, mat pack piercing kit, dimensionals

How do you make this card?
Stamp little stars on Very Vanilla card front using both Cameo Coral and Chocolate Chip inkpads.

Stamp giraffe in Chocolate Chip classic ink onto Very Vanilla cs & layer it onto Cameo Coral cs. Cut a 3" square of Chocolate Chip cs & adhere it onto the card front near the bottom of the card. Adhere the giraffe piece onto the card.

Lastly, cute a thin strip of Cameo Coral cs just a little longer than the giraffe piece & pierce holes across it using the mat pack. Layer it with dimensionals onto a slightly wider strip of Regal Rose cs. Slide on the metal spiral clippie. Adhere the piece to the card using dimensionals.

Oh, I almost forgot the best part....color in the giraffe with Stampin' Write markers, Cameo Coral for the giraffe spots and Cameo Coral for the antennae and star and nose.

Whatever Wednesday - Bridal Shower

There's a special bridal shower later this month that I made invitations for.

I think the invitations turned out very pretty.  Melon Mambo cs is run thru a Big Shot Die-Cut Machine in the Stampin' Up Manhattan Flower embossing folder and then trimmed across the tops of the flowers.   A Night of Navy strip of cs is adhered on the bottom edge & a brad is inserted in the bottom corner thru the pink/navy front and the white cs card base.  The white card base is the computer-generated invitation message.

Have you noticed that the Fifth Avenue Floral stamp set matches the Manhattan Flower embossing folder?  Those two products create a beautiful project when paired together.  So, I stamped the flower in Night of Navy ink onto Melon Mambo cs & cut around the flower.  The flower is adhered with dimensionals.

I also punched the top edge of the invitation with the eyelet border punch to make it look like white eyelet lace.

I also designed this pretty matching candy favor for the guests!

Tuesday Tip - So You Don't Have the Right Color Inkpad? Solution Here....

So, you choose a color palette for a card that you are going to create.  Next, you get out the card stock in all three colors, say Tempting Turquoise, Lovely Lilac, and Regal Rose.  Now, it's time to pull out the inkpads.......ok, here's the Tempting Turquoise inkpad, here's the Lovely Lilac inkpad, yikes!   I thought I owned a Regal Rose inkpad.  Hmmmm..   What do I do?

I thought I owned just about every Stampin' Up color in both card stock AND inkpad.  Wrong.  Somehow Regal Rose escaped my clutch.

I had already begun to create my card with the colors I had planned.  What did I do to solve my problem?  It's a perfect solution that I just know you are going to want to do too.  I just used the card stock and Versamark ink.  I then sprinkled clear embossing powder onto my Versamarked image, heated it with a heat tool, and viola!  I had a Regal Rose flower!  It was even a SHINY Regal Rose flower!  The mother of all inventions.  If you don't have the ink you need for a project, substitute Versamark ink and the color of card stock that you want your image to be!

Love ITTTTTT!

Map It Monday - Three Little Words: Sketch For You

This card gives the recipient an added bonus......a mini flower just clipped onto the front of the card.  Isn't it clever?  The inside of the card says "Thinking of You".  This card would be terrific for a friend who is recuperating from an illness or surgery, and she could unclip the little watercolored piece to use as a bookmark.  The map is so versatile that it can be created with any type of small stamp.....an animal, a leaf, something seasonal like a pumpkin or holly with berries, hearts, or even a birthday stamp such as a birthday cake or party hat.

I layered Green Galore cs onto a Bermuda Bay card.   The card is a standard 4 1/4" x 5 1/2" card, and the Green Galore layer is 4" x 5 1/4".  Then, I cut a Whisper White cs to 3 3/4" x 5" and punched the corners with a ticket corner punch.

The stamping is simply a flower stamp inked on a Bermuda Bay inkpad, though I stamped second generation flowers to give a lighter, softer look.  The "Three Little Words" is stamped in first generation stamping.

I stamped the same flower in black Stazon ink onto a scrap of Whisper White cs & ripped the left side, to look as though it were ripped from a sketch book.  I colored the flowers with Stampin' Write markers.

I used a sweet little black Mini Library Clip (on page 179 in the IB&C) to attached the single flower piece.

Have a great week!

Linda
